There is something incredibly special about creating a home that feels layered, collected, and deeply personal. For this formal living room makeover, our goal was to design a space that felt elevated enough for entertaining while still remaining warm, cozy, and inviting for everyday life. We wanted the room to embody timeless traditional style with rich textures, antique-inspired details, soft lighting, and meaningful pieces that tell a story.
I am a firm believer in mixing old and new pieces. I am sentimental by nature, and am always finding ways to display personal items. I am also an antique collector by trade and by choice, meaning that my home is filled with old and very old decor items that speak to me. To balance it all, I am also of the mind that being the first owner of certain pieces, when acquired with intention, is a special experience. This formal living room is a testament to all of that, and more.
One of the biggest transformations in the room came from the stunning Graz Leather Sofa from Valencia Theater Seating and their new Lifestyle Line. One of the most meaningful parts of this makeover is that much of the remaining decor and furniture in the room was sourced secondhand or has come from family. We found several pieces through Facebook Marketplace, while others came directly from my antique shop, Gentri Lee Antiques. Mixing antique and vintage pieces with newer investment furniture creates so much depth and character within a home. I truly believe that spaces feel the most beautiful when they reflect personal history, craftsmanship, and thoughtful collecting rather than simply purchasing everything new.
Throughout the room, we layered antique wood tones, vintage accents, traditional artwork, soft textiles, and collected decor to create a moody yet welcoming atmosphere. The combination of old and new gives the room soul while still feeling elevated and functional for entertaining guests. It feels formal without being untouchable, which was exactly the vision we hoped to achieve.
The large painting over the fireplace came into my possession recently. In March, my father passed away suddenly. This painting was done by our cousin, his niece, and purchased by my sister as a gift for our father for Christmas. It had never been framed, so I carefully carried it back to New England from Utah (it came on the plane with me) then had it professionally framed with a burl wood frame. The combination and the personal history behind the piece is so special. To complete the vignette I had to frame my favorite photo of my father, so all who visit can see this shrine of honor.
This makeover reminded me that creating a beautiful home does not have to happen all at once. Some of the best interiors are built slowly over time through meaningful finds, secondhand treasures, investment pieces, and items that genuinely bring joy into your space.
