Our Favorite Spring Activity in Connecticut: Wicked Tulips Flower Farm

Spring in New England is truly a magical time… As long as it isn’t raining too much (which it definitely has been, this year.) The blooming florals and old architecture really come alive with the Spring sunshine and it has personally become my most anticipated time of year.

With the changing of the seasons comes the excitement of seasonal activities. Summer brings the beach days, In Autumn we always look forward to the cider mills opening up, Winter has its holiday markets, and Spring has the flowers. While there are multiple floral events we try to experience each year, our favorite has definitely got to be the Wicked Tulips Flower Farm in Preston, CT.

Preston is a small, quiet, New England town, nestled in the rolling hills of Connecticut. Surrounded by woodlands you will find the tulip garden, carefully tended to and eagerly awaiting each guest to have their own, personal adventure. The farm is a u-pick, allowing each eager visitor to pick a certain number of freshly bloomed tulips. While limited, the farm offers baskets for gathering your tulips (although I recommend brining your own) and a wrapping station where you can carefully wrap your bouquet in a blanket of brown paper—giving the entire experience the aesthetic it deserves.

Steve and I went the first week the farm opened, this year. While waiting another week may have offered more tulip varieties to choose from, I was far too anxious to wait any longer. Even though it was early in their season, the tulips still put on quite the show! The weather was perfect and the rows of tulips were displaying all sorts of vibrant colors. There was even a roped off section for a nesting bird, and I couldn’t help but think how that mother bird picked the most beautiful spot to raise her young chicks.

TULIP PICKING TIPS:

With all types and varieties of tulips, it’s important to take your time strolling down each row to ensure you pick exactly what you want, as you are only allowed a certain amount before additional fees are added. We always suggest looking for those that have not yet bloomed, as they will last the longest once you get them home. And be sure to pick from the base of the stem and return any bulbs you may accidentally acquire.

To make the experience extra special, arrive in your best flower-picking-outfit and bring your own gathering basket. This will ensure your photos turn out just right and are something you’ll be extra proud to share.

And of course, be sure to follow all of the farm rules and be respectful of the farm and other guests. Everyone deserves to have a beautiful experience when visiting!
